WGAL reporter Matt Barcaro will tell the story of Native Americans who are trying to find loved ones buried in unmarked graves at the site of the first federal off-reservation Indian boarding school in the country.The Carlisle Indian School, also known as the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, is one of the first boarding schools for Native Americans. Opened in 1879, the U.S. government used the Carlisle Barracks for the school until 1918. During the time the school was in operation, the school was attended by over 10,000 Native American children who were recruited from tribes across the country. Over 180 children died at the school, and some were never returned to their families. WGAL 8 reporter Matt Barcaro traveled the country to meet the descendants of students who died at the Carlisle Indian School. “The Lost Children of Carlisle” examines the difficult legacy of the federal government's Native American boarding school programs.
