The Republican presidential hopefuls started descending on the Iowa State Fair Thursday, just more than a week ahead of the first Republican primary debate in Milwaukee.
WISN 12 News political director Matt Smith is in Des Moines reporting ahead of the debate and for a special edition of "UPFRONT" Sunday.
Former Vice President Mike Pence was one of the first to arrive, speaking at the Des Moines Register's political soapbox.
"I am here to see the butter cow," he told the crowd to cheers.
Pence is significantly trailing in the polls behind former President Donald Trump, who will be at the fair Saturday as the candidates begin to focus on Milwaukee.
"Well, I couldn't be more happy that we're going to be on the stage in Milwaukee," Pence said.
One of the key debate criteria to appear on stage, set by the Republican National Committee, is a pledge to support the eventual Republican nominee.
Former U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley released an image of her signed copy Thursday.
"We'll finish the paperwork on showing up before the 23rd," Pence said when asked by Smith when he'd sign the pledge.
In an interview on Newsmax, Trump said he wouldn't sign the pledge.
Also Thursday, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burnum, who qualified for the debate after in part sending $20 gift cards to supporters to reach 40,000 donors, said he had already signed the pledge as well.
"It was very important," Burnum said of making the debate stage in Milwaukee. "But of course, making the debate stage, these are like clubhouse rules that the RNC came up with."
More candidates will appear at the Iowa State Fair Friday and Saturday, including Trump, Haley, Gov. Ron DeSantis and Vivek Ramaswamy.
