Back-to-school season is in full swing!
This year, the National Retail Federation says Americans will spend $41.5 billion getting their families ready for the new year.
WISN 12 News visited multiple stores in search of three of the most popular back-to-school items; backpacks, notebooks and folders.
The Meijer in Wauwatosa had a huge selection of backpacks starting at $24.99 and going up to $69.99.
The Target in West Milwaukee on the other hand barely had any backpacks left — the ones available were $49.99 and $39.99.
We couldn't find any backpacks at the Dollar Tree in Wauwatosa.
As for notebooks, at Meijer, a sale on the generic brand, costing about $1.49 each. Five Star notebooks, also on sale, from $2.99 to 6.49.
At Target, not a lot to choose from, and prices range from $1.79 to about $4. In the parking lot, we talked to the parents of five children who say they spend a small fortune on back-to-school supplies!
Cqumi Willaims said they spend about $1,200 each year for all five kids.
No notebooks left at the Dollar Tree we visited, but if you find some, they'll be $1.25.
Lastly, the cheapest thing on our list is folders. Target has them on sale for 50 cents each, with plenty in stock.
Meijer also had a good amount to choose from, ranging from fifty cents to a dollar fifty.
We found Myrtle Crawford scanning the aisles, making sure she got the best deals for her grandkids.
"All I can say is shop around ... some places have it, and some places don't," she said.
