The Sherman Phoenix Marketplace on Thursday celebrated its fifth anniversary.
The community marketplace opened on Nov. 30, 2018. It's built from the shell of the BMO Harris Bank building, which burned during the civil unrest following a fatal police shooting two years earlier.
Kamar Carter's journey at Sherman Phoenix started in 2018.
"We were selling products in the vault when Sherman Phoenix first opened, so now for the fifth year anniversary, we're right here in our own space," he said.
Carter owns House of Vitali-tea, which specializes in natural supplements and herbs. He remembers the day Sherman Phoenix opened, with a heavy police presence, and telling an officer it was a blessing in disguise.
"I just think what's going on here will impact the community a lot more than that bank ever did," he said at that time.
This community is how the marketplace came into existence after a fatal police shooting in 2016.
"The community gathered together and had some conversations about what this community needed and could benefit from, and out of the ashes, the phoenix rises," said Sherman Phoenix Foundation Executive Director Dr. Stacia Thompson.
"The doors opened in 2018 as a Black entrepreneurial marketplace, a place for people to gather and a place of commerce," she added.
This hub has everything from a barber shop to barbecue. Kevin Junior, owner of Junior's Smoked BBQ, serves up food and opportunity to his neighbors.
"A lot of little boys around the neighborhood, they'll come in here, we'll pay them to do certain things, that way, they're their own boss," he said.
And as Sherman Phoenix moves forward, he says the sky is the limit.
"I'm growing so fast that sooner or later, I know I'm not gonna be here, but it will give somebody else the chance to start off," he said.
The Hoan Bridge was lit up in turquoise and gold Thursday night to mark the special occasion.
