'You can see the love': Couple falls in love at senior living facility, shares journey of love during golden years

Marilyn DePlaza, 90, and Bernard Handis, 94, share their story of how, during times of grief, they found love in their golden years. They have been together for about a year.

One couple in Boca Raton, Florida, shared their own story of how they found love in their golden years. Marilyn DePlaza, 90, and Bernard Handis, 94, both live at Stratford Court of Boca Pointe, a senior living facility. Their love story went like this: she was teaching Spanish there, and he was a student. DePlaza noticed later that Handis was sitting by himself. "Having his dinner, he looked pretty lonely, and I knew that he had just lost his wife, the day after I lost my son," she said. "So, I knew how it felt to be lonely and sad. I walked over to him in the dining room, and I said...""'If you need a friend, I’ll be your friend,'" Handis completed her sentence. "The next day, I was outside sitting on the bench. And Marilyn came out. I said, 'Come over, we’ll sit and talk,'" Handis said. "So, she came over, and said, 'OK Bernie, I’ll be your friend but no hanky panky.'"And the rest is pretty much history. The lovebirds bonded over their life achievements and obstacles and also shared stories of their careers. "The descriptions of the articles, which he spent a dollar for and sold for something like $250. And I get so excited," DePlaza said. The couple has been together for about a year now. "He’s very handsome, and he’s so smart. He’s so smart about everything," she said. "She’s a strong woman, she’s beautiful, she’s compassionate," he said. They found love in a place, at a time, where they never thought would happen. "This is the place where people come, not to retire but really to rediscover themselves," PJ Petkovic, executive director of Stratford Court of Boca Pointe, said. "You can see the love that they’re showing to each other, you can see the love in their lives, in the genuine caring that they have towards each other."DePlaza and Handis' love story teaches the world a beautiful lesson: You can find someone to hold your hand during times of grief. "We did a lot of talking about our losses, and a lot of crying," she said. "None of our feelings for our loved ones or anything are going to change. But this is brand new, going forward, something to look forward to," Handis said. The couple also shared some of the highlights of their love journey, including playing endless games of Rummikub. "She’s approximately 82 games ahead of me, that’s — almost 1,300 games," he said. And if you're ever wondering where the couple is, you can find them at their morning coffee date at 11:15 a.m. every single day. "He has coffee, and I look at him and ruffle his hair," DePlaza said, laughing.
