YOU. RIGHT NOW, WE’RE APPROACHING THE END OF ALZHEIMER’S AWARENESS MONTH. IN RECENT RESEARCH FINDS DISPARITIES IN WHO’S IMPACTED BY THE DISEASE. ACCORDING TO THE ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION, ALZHEIMER’S AFFECTS BLACK ADULTS AT TWICE THE RATE OF WHITE ADULTS. JOINING US NOW AT FOREST, GINA GREEN HERE AS SHE’S THE DIRECTOR OF THE WISCONSIN ALZHEIMER’S INSTITUTE’S MILWAUKEE OFFICE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME THIS AFTERNOON. WE WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS DISPARITY. WHY IS THERE THIS THIS DISPARITY? GOOD AFTERNOON. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME. I THINK, YOU KNOW, THE REASON FOR THIS DISPARITY IS BASED ON, YOU KNOW, HEALTH DIFFERENCES IS ACCESS TO RESOURCES. HIS DIAGNOSIS, LATER STAGES. ET CETERA. SO WE KNOW THAT, YOU KNOW, AFRICAN AMERICANS ARE UP TO TWO TIMES MORE LIKELY TO BE DIAGNOSED WITH DEMENTIA AND OTHER COMMUNITIES OF COLOR. HISPANICS ARE ONE AND A HALF TO TWO TIMES MORE LIKELY AS WELL. BUT IT’S GETTING A DIAGNOSIS EARLY THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE FOR OUR COMMUNITIES. WHY DOES IT MAKE THAT DIFFERENCE? ABSOLUTELY. WE KNOW THAT, AGAIN, THINKING ABOUT WHERE WHEN A PERSON GOES TO THE DOCTOR AND THEY ARE EXHIBITING SIGNS OF ALZHEIMER’S OR SOME TYPE OF MEMORY OR COGNITION DISRUPTION, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE PAY ATTENTION TO THAT, THAT WE RECOGNIZE THAT WHEN WE NOTICE OURSELVES BEING MORE THAN FORGETFUL, BUT INTERRUPTING OUR DAILY LIVING HABITS, IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE PAY ATTENTION TO THAT SO THAT WE CAN TALK TO OUR DOCTORS AND GET A DIAGNOSIS EARLIER, DIAGNOSE THIS ALSO CAN LEAD TO THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SUPPORT FOR THOSE PERSONS WHO MAY BE DIAGNOSED AND THEIR FAMILIES OF HOW TO LIVE WITH A DIAGNOSIS OF DEMENTIA OR ALZHEIMER’S. AND EVEN BEFORE MAYBE A DIAGNOSIS. WHAT CAN PEOPLE DO TO PROTECT THEMSELVES? MAYBE LIMIT THE CHANCE? SO WE KNOW THAT, YOU KNOW, YOU CAN REDUCE SOME OF YOUR RISK FACTORS, BUT AND STAVE OFF. BUT WE CANNOT SAY THAT BECAUSE YOU DO CERTAIN THINGS, YOU WILL NOT GET ALZHEIMER’S AND DEMENTIA. BUT WE KNOW DIET IS IMPORTANT. WE KNOW ACTIVITY IS IMPORTANT. ACTIVITY IN MIDLIFE IS IMPORTANT. WE KNOW THINKING ABOUT HOW WE ARE CONTROLLING OUR BLOOD PRESSURE OR DIABETES IS REALLY IMPORTANT. AND MANAGING THAT OR STAVING THOSE THINGS OFF BY MAKING SURE WE’RE EATING HEALTHY, EXERCISING UP TO 30 MINUTES A DAY FOR 150 MINUTES A WEEK, MAKING SURE WE’RE GETTING ENOUGH REST, ENOUGH SLEEP, BUT ALSO SO TAKING NOTICE OF CHANGES THAT ARE OCCURRING WITHIN OUR BODIES TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE PAYING ATTENTION TO THOSE THINGS. ALL RIGHT.
