An off-duty Milwaukee police was seriously injured Sunday night in a crash between a car and a semi-truck near Pennsylvania and Poplar avenues, according to Oak Creek police.
WISN 12 News has confirmed through multiple sources that 30-year-old Officer James Nowak was the driver.
Oak Creek police said Nowak is in intensive care at Froedtert Hospital in grave condition. He is not expected to survive, police said.
An Oak Creek police captain told WISN 12 News the two vehicles were both traveling southbound on Pennsylvania when the semi attempted to make a U-turn.
A WISN 12 News crew observed no semi truck signs on Pennsylvania Ave. about a half mile away from the crash scene.
Oak Creek police said the semi-truck driver and passenger did stay at the scene and are cooperating with the investigation. They were not hurt.
There was no one else in the car.
Milwaukee police have not made any statements.
Nowak is the former partner of fallen Officer Peter Jerving, who was killed in the line-of-duty in February during a foot chase on the south side. Nowak was not with Jerving during the confrontation.
A growing memorial with a cross, flag and flowers was near the crash scene Monday night. A GoFundMe campaign has been started for Nowak's family.
