New video, obtained by 12 News Investigates through a public records request, shows the moments leading up to a deadly attempted heist of an armored truck at a North Shore Bank location near 58th and West Forest Home Avenue in Milwaukee in May.
The suspect, armed with what a guard tells police is an "improvised weapon," comes up to the side of a Thillens armored truck and walks inside. After shooting one guard, another guard shoots the suspect, 47-year-old Pablo Bermudez, from Kenosha.
"I shot him in the torso," the guard tells 911 dispatch. "I think he's done. Okay, no, he just made some noise. I think he's still alive, but he is face down."
Police, who redacted and edited some of the video, say a 36-year-old guard was shot.
"What'd you get hit with?" A Milwaukee police officer asks him.
"He's got a bullet wound to the back, right side, conscious and breathing," another officer tells dispatch over his radio about the guard.
The suspect died from the gunshot wounds he received from the guard. No charges were filed, and the shooting was ruled self-defense. A follow-up inquiry for information sent to Milwaukee police was not answered Thursday. A phone call and email to Thillens, the armored truck company, was not returned.
The "improvised weapon" the suspect had appears to be a slam-fire shotgun. In May, police told 12 News three guns were recovered: two pistols and a shotgun.
This shooting is one of three that targeted armored trucks in Milwaukee in 2023. In January, armed robbers held up an armored truck at the North Shore Bank near 79th Street and Capitol Drive. Two other men are charged in a deadly armored truck robbery at that same location. Fif-year-old Scott Bee was killed.
