Emotional vets return from Honor Flight
Day long trip to D.C. culminates with airport full of well-wishers

After a full day of sightseeing in Washington D.C., the veterans return to Mitchell Airport packed with people wanting to thank them and welcome them home.

This was the 35th flight (and subsequent homecoming) out of Milwaukee since inception in 2008.

Currently Stars and Stripes Honor Flight serves WWII and Korean War vets in addition to terminally ill vets of any conflict.

On this flight were 24 WWII, 60 Korean War, and 4 terminally ill Vietnam vets.

The 35th Mission took 87 male and 1 female veteran to see the memorials built in their honor. She is a WWII Marine.

The WWII Memorial did not open until 2004 and many veterans are unable to visit without assistance.

If you are going to go, go all out! This family had custom shirts made denoting their proud relationship to their vet.

It is always amazing to see how these homecomings bridge the generations and how much we all owe to our veterans for the sacrifices they made.

Since 2008, more than 4,600 vets have taken this free one-day trip to Washington D.C. with the help and coordination of Stars and Stripes Honor Flight.

Nationally, more than 150,000 veterans have seen their memorials thanks to the Honor Flight network.

The day starts early with the veterans arriving a the airport around 5:30am.

In D.C. the vets visit: WWII Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, Iwo Jima, Air Force Memorial, the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery before returning to Milwaukee for the surprise homecoming.

Upon returning to Milwaukee, the vets are greeted by active duty military before they make their way to the homecoming celebration.
