WISN 12 News Political Director Matt Smith oversees the station’s political coverage, serves as executive producer and co-host of "UPFRONT" and reports on the most significant political stories covering Wisconsin and the nation.

Matt has covered politics for nearly two decades, more than 10 of those years in Wisconsin. His unparalleled political reporting of Wisconsin politics routinely breaks stories that make national headlines with national implications. Matt’s reporting has appeared on ABC’s World News Tonight, Fox News, MSNBC and has been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, POLITICO and other national publications.

He’s interviewed presidents, reported from the White House, on the campaign trail from Iowa to New York and extensively covered former Vice President Mike Pence during his time as governor and 2016 campaign to become vice president.

Matt joined WISN 12 News in 2019 from CBS4 and FOX 59 in Indianapolis, where he served as anchor and political reporter. Before that, he spent seven years at WBAY-TV in Green Bay as an anchor, political and investigative reporter. He started his career at KBJR-TV in Duluth. Matt has received numerous Emmy awards for journalistic excellence and other honors including from the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association, Milwaukee Press Club and Society of Professional Journalists.

Matt oversees "UPFRONT," WISN-TV’s Sunday morning public affairs and political show that is broadcast on all ABC affiliates in Wisconsin.

Matt is a Minnesota native. He and his wife have three girls and reside in Southeast Wisconsin.
