PATRICK THIS IS WHERE JAMES NOWAK CAME TO WORK EVERY DAY AND WITH HIS SUDDEN LOSS, THE FLAGS HERE TONIGHT AT DISTRICT FOUR ARE BEING FLOWN AT HALF STAFF IN HIS MEMORY. THE DEPARTMENT IS HURTING RIGHT NOW AND A LOT SUNDAY NIGHT, OAK CREEK POLICE SAY NOWAK CRASHED INTO THE SIDE OF A SEMI TRUCK WHILE OFF DUTY MILWAUKEE POLICE ASSOCIATION VICE PRESIDENT ALEXANDER AYALA SAYS IT’S ANOTHER BLOW FOR MILWAUKEE POLICE DISTRICT FOUR. LOSING OFFICER NOWAK IS SOMETHING NOBODY WAS EXPECTING AFTER LOSING HIS PARTNER TO AN ON DUTY DEATH. THAT PARTNER, OFFICER PETER GERVING, KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY IN A SHOOTOUT BACK IN FEBRUARY. DISTRICT FOUR. I MEAN, WE FEEL FOR THOSE GUYS. IT’S BEEN NONSTOP ROLLER COASTER FOR THEM. WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT OFFICER NOWAK? I KNOW THAT HIM AND HIS PARTNER WERE CLOSE, AND I KNOW THAT BOTH OF THEIR DEDICATION TO OUR PROFESSION WAS UNWAVERING. I MEAN, EVEN TILL HIS LAST BREATH, HE WAS AN ORGAN DONOR AND HE WANTED TO HELP HIS COMMUNITY. NOW HE’S REALLY GOING TO HELP ANYBODY THAT OBVIOUSLY WAS A RECIPIENT OF THOSE ORGANS. IOWA SAYS OFFICERS HAVE ACCESS TO THERAPISTS AND CHAPLAINS TO HELP PROCESS THE SUDDEN LOSS. WE’RE, YOU KNOW, A BAND OF BROTHERS, RIGHT LIKE THAT. WE’RE ALL UNITED. WE’RE ALL ONE BIG FAMILY IN BLUE. THE DEPARTMENT IS GIVING THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO DECOMPRESS, PROCESS THIS SO THAT WE CAN SERVE OUR COMMUNITY THE NEXT DAY AND EMILY, THAT DISTRICT HAS LOST THREE OFFICERS SINCE 2018. Officer James Nowak died Wednesday after crashing into a tractor-trailer Sunday

The Milwaukee Police Association is mourning the loss of Milwaukee police Officer James Nowak."The department is hurting right now, a lot," said Milwaukee Police Association Vice President Alexander Ayala. Nowak died Wednesday night, three days after crashing into a tractor-trailer in Oak Creek while off-duty. Ayala says it's another blow for Milwaukee police district four."Losing Officer Nowak is something no one was expecting after losing his partner to an on-duty death," Ayala said.Nowak's partner was Officer Peter Jerving. Jerving was killed in the line of duty in a shooting in February 2023. "District four, I mean, we feel for those guys. It's been a non-stop roller coaster for them," Ayala said.According to Ayala, district four closed its doors Monday after learning about the crash. Neighboring districts helped answer calls for service."I know that him and his partner were close and I know that both of their dedication to our profession was unwavering," Ayala said. "I mean, even until his last breath, he was an organ donor, and he wanted to help his community. Now he's really going to help anybody that was a recipient of those organs."The Milwaukee Police Association says officers have access to therapists and chaplains to help process the sudden loss. "We're a band of brothers, right? We're all united. We're all one big family in blue," Ayala said. "The department is giving them the opportunity to decompress (and) process this so that we can serve our community the next day." District four has lost four officers since 2018. It's the same station Officer Kou Her and Officer Charles Irvine Jr. worked out of. Officer Her was killed by a drunk driver while coming home from a shift in 2019. Officer Irvine died in a rollover squad crash in 2018. Oak Creek police are leading the investigation into the crash that took Nowak's life.Nowak's funeral services are planned for Wednesday, December 13 in Franklin.According to his obituary, memorials would be appreciated to the Fallen Hero's Fund in Nowak's Honor.

Nowak died Wednesday night, three days after crashing into a tractor-trailer in Oak Creek while off-duty.
